Will it make businesses work differently after?
As an IT Support company we had our employees working from home before the lock down. Therefore, ensuring no disruption to our Customers and iron out anything that wasn’t quite working as it should. We have continued to provide the same level of support (other than site visits), as like our peers, we already use remote tools to enable us to this when in the office.
Over the last month we have been preparing, purchasing hardware on behalf of our Customers and setting up VPN’s to enable them to work from home. Other than maybe having to be a little more patient, or working in a slightly different way, working from home – without much notice or in-depth planning, is generally working.
Of course, under different circumstances, planning to work on a more permanent basis may require a bit more forethought such as:
- Your internet
- VoIP phones to connect the business as if in the office
- Office365
- Consider what applications/programs you need and how well would they work remotely
- Should you migrate to a cloud server
- Your working environment
What positives or benefits can be had by working from home?
Working from home can give that work life balance most of us need. That’s not to say sitting at home in your PJ’s, or having your friends over is the right balance, you still need to remember you are working.
There are possible productivity gains to be had. You are more focused because you have less interruptions, you are less stressed, no commute, less fuel and therefore reducing your carbon footprint. Offering the ability to work from home can also open’s up the talent pool for some businesses, as they can offer possible employees the choice to work from home, where they can. It could work out to be a win win for both employers and employees.
It certainly isn’t for everyone, but it will be interesting to see how many of us will continue to work from home, for some or all of the week after this crisis passes.
